Leatherworking in World of Warcraft FAQ

1 What’s good about Leatherworking?
Making your armor for yourself, for friends, or to sell.
Making armor patches for yourself, for your friends, or to sell.
Being able to upgrade lesser leather into better leather.
2.2 What Profession type or category is Leatherworking?
Primary. It DOES count against your limit of two (2) Primary Professions.
Manufacturing.
2.3 What kind of things can I make with Leatherworking?
You can find a list of the various items you can make with leatherworking at Thottbot or the Professions Compendium (links in the Unofficial Resources section).
High-end leatherworkers can also make mail. (So, dont worry if you are a hunter or shaman with leatherworking, you can still make your own armor after 40.)
2.4 Can I make bags with Leatherworking?
There is only one bag pattern available to Leatherworkers.
Horde Leatherworkers can complete the quest for the 6-slot Kodo Hide Bag recipe in Thunder Bluff.
There are no bag patterns available to Alliance Leatherworkers at this time.
2.5 What ingredients does Leatherworking use?
Skinned items (leathers, hides, scales).
Purchased components (dyes, thread, salt).
Items made by other professions (potions, buckles).
Dropped items (fangs, plants, gems, etc).
good rule of thumb: If you get an item, and the name is in white, look up that item on Thottbot or the Professions Compendium and see if you need it for a future recipe.
2.6 How does Leatherworking work with the various classes?
Rogues, Hunters, Druids and Shamans all benefit from being able to wear the items they make with Leatherworking, so it is a good match for these classes.
Paladins and Warriors would still be able to wear all of the items, they can While probably find better items in the mail and plate world.
Any class can benefit from the ability to make armor patches and upgrade leather, as well as being able to sell what they make.
2.7 What professions does Leatherworking match up with well?
BEST: Skinning: This is the ideal combination for Leatherworking. All items take some amount of leather or hide to make, and being able to supply your own components is very useful. If you are doing Leatherworking in conjunction with Skinning, you should definitely read Zarzz’s Skinning FAQ: Eaten. TBU
GOOD: Enchanting: If you have an acceptable way to obtain components to make items with, Leatherworking is a good way to make additional items to disenchant.
OK: Blacksmithing/Tailoring: With this combo you will be able to make a wide array of armor, including cloth and plate. Keep in mind, that with two manufacturing skills, you will be paying for your materials, or using an alt to farm them.
POOR: Other professions don’t complement Leatherworking as well as those listed above.
3. ABOUT ADVANCEMENT IN LEATHERWORKING
3.1 I would like to learn Leatherworking, who can train me and what are the requirements?
All major cities have an Journeyman Leatherworker who will train you in Apprentice Leatherworking. Ask a guard for directions.
Requires level 5 and 5 copper.
3.2 How do I advance my Leatherworking skill?
Make armor, patches, etc. Each time you make something, there is a chance that you will get a skill point.
Orange items will always increase your skill when made.
Yellow items will sometimes increase your skill when made.
Green items will rarely increase your skill when made.
Gray items will never increase your skill when made.
3.3 How do I make something?
Find your Leatherworking icon on your abilities page and click it to bring up the Leatherworking UI.
Click on the item you’d like to make to see the required components.
If you have the required components in your inventory, click on the ‘Create’ button.
If you want to make many of the same item at once, you can change the number at the bottom of the window or click the ‘Create All’ button to make as many as you have the components for.
3.4 What do the numbers next to the recipes mean?
This number is how many of an item you can make with the resources you have in your inventory. It does not take into account the resources you may have in your bank.
3.5 What does advancing my Leatherworking Skill do?
Allows you to create better, higher level items. High skill Leatherworkers can also make mail and specialized items.
3.6 I’ve stopped getting skill points when I create items. What’s going on?
Try making orange or yellow items.
You may have reached the maximum number of skill points you may have at your Leatherworking tier. See the Ranks/Levels below.
3.7 What are the different levels/ranks I can get?
Rank (Min - Max Skills)
Apprentice (1-75)
Journeyman (50-150)
Expert (125-225)
Artisan (200-300)
3.8 Where do I train Journeyman Leatherworking?
All major cities have an Expert Leatherworker who will train you in Journeyman Leatherworking. Ask a guard for directions.
Requires level 10 and 5 silver.
3.9 Where do I train Expert Leatherworking?
Alliance Artisan Leatherworker: Telonis, in Darnassus
Horde Artisan Leatherworker: Una, in Thunder Bluff
Requires level 20 and 50 silver.
3.10 Where do I train Artisan Leatherworking?
, The Hinterlands
Alliance Master Leatherworker: Drakk Stonehand, in Aerie Peak
Horde Master Leatherworker: Hahrana Ironhide, in Camp Mojache, Feralas
Requires level 35 and 5 gold.
3.11 What about Specialized Leatherworking?
See Section 4.
3.12 How do I unlearn Leatherworking and what happens when I do?
Press ‘K’ to see your skills panel and click on Leatherworking. In the lower panel, you’ll see your skill with a slashed circle button. Press that button to unlearn Leatherworking.
When you unlearn the skill, you lose all skill points you have gained and all recipes you have learned. You should make sure you truly want to get rid of your skill before you click the button.
You can not reset your specialization by unlearning Leatherworking. There is no way to change your specialization at this time.
3.13 What can you tell me about Armor Kits?
To apply an armor kit, right click the kit in your inventory, and then click the piece of armor you want to apply it to.
The level requirement on armor kits refers to the minimum level on the armor, *not* the level of the character trying to apply it. For example, a Medium Armor Kit (Level 5 min) can only be applied to armor that is Min Level 5 or higher.
They can only be applied to chest, glove, leg, or foot armor.
They can be applied to any armor type (cloth, leather, mail, plate).
They count as a permanent bonus. This means that you can have a kit *or* an enchantment, but not both.
3.14 Where can I find patterns to make items that my trainer doesn’t teach?
Patterns are available from vendors around the world and from drops. See the Professions Compendium (http://tinyurl.com/6kpty/) for a listing of which patterns are vendor or drop.
Some vendors require that you have friendly faction with them before they will sell to you.
There are a few patterns that are known to be Bind on Pickup, so you will actually have to go kill or quest for them.
Known quested patterns: Kodo Hide Bag (Horde only), Moonglow Vest (Alliance only), Deviate Scale Belt, Wild Leather Shoulders, Wild Leather Helmet, Wild Leather Vest, Wild Leather Leggings, Wild Leather Boots, Wild Leather Cloak
Known BoP patterns: Wicked Leather Bracers, Heavy Scorpid Vest, Chimeric Gloves
Known faction related patterns: Warbear Woolies [Timbermaw, Friendly], Warbear Harness [Timbermaw, Friendly], Corehound Boots [Thorium Brotherhood, Friendly], Molten Helm [Thorium Brotherhood, Friendly], Black Dragonscale Boots [Thorium Brotherhood, Honored]
3.15 I can’t find a pattern for converting Thick Leather to Rugged Leather. Does it exist?
There is not currently a conversion available from Thick to Rugged Leather. Rest assured, it has been brought to the attention of the devs.
ALL ABOUT SPECIALIZED LEATHERWORKING
4.1 What are my specialization options?
You can choose the Tribal, Elemental, or Dragonscale path.
See below for a list of what each path makes to aid in your decision.
4.2 How do I go about specializing?
Requires 225 Leatherworking skill, level 40, and Artisan Leatherworking.
Find the correct trainer and complete their quest.
4.3 Can I ever switch to another path?
Once you have chosen a path by completing the quest, you cannot change paths, even if you unlearn Leatherworking and start over.
You are not locked into a specialization until you actually complete the quest and are granted the specialized skill. Check your skills page if you’re not sure whether or not you have completed a quest.
If you have accepted the quest and you change your mind, you can abandon it and be able to accept a different quest.
4.4 Which high level leather sets aren’t tied to a Specialization?
The following sets of skill 200+ crafted armor do not require any specialization: Nightscape, Turtle Scale (Mail), Voodoo, Tough Scorpid (Mail), Wild Leather, Heavy Scorpid (Mail), Wicked Leather, Runic Leather.
4.5 What path should I pick?
There is no hard and fast rule for what path to choose. The best thing to do is to check out the listing below of what each path makes and decide what items you’d like to be able to make.
4.5b But everyone keeps saying Hunter/Shaman = Dragonscale, Rogue =
Elemental, Druid = Tribal!
In beta, before the higher level specialized patterns were out, people based their specialization on those two initial items learned from the specialized trainers, which imply Hunter/Shaman = Dragonscale, Druid = Tribal, and Rogue = Elemental.
However, on release, the items you could make from dropped patterns don’t exactly fit that mold. People continue to tell others to use this model, even though it’s no longer entirely accurate. (Note: if you see people disseminating this incorrect information, feel free to point them to this FAQ.)
4.6 Where are the specialized trainers?
Alliance
Dragonscale: Peter Galen, in Azshara (along the southern edge of the Ruins of Eldarath, up on the cliffs)
Elemental: Sarah Tanner, in Tanner’s Camp, Searing Gorge (southeast corner of the zone)
Tribal: Caryssia Moonhunter, in Thalanaar, Feralas/Thousand Needles border
Horde
Dragonscale: Thorkaf Dragoneye, in Badlands (near Lethlor Ravine, just above Garek)
Elemental: Brumn Winterhoof, in Arathi Highlands (on a hill, across from Stromgarde Keep)
Tribal: Se’Jib, in Stranglethorn Vale (south of Grom’gol)
4.7 What does the Dragonscale quest require?
Bring the trainer 10x Worn Dragonscale, 2x Tough Scorpid Breastplate, 2x Tough Scorpid Gloves.
Both scorpid patterns are dropped.
Worn Dragonscales can be skinned from 41+ dragonkin.
Be aware, if you are also wearing one of these items, the trainer may take the one you are wearing. This has been brought to the attention of the devs as a bug.
You will not get these items back.
4.8 What does the Elemental quest require?
Bring the trainer 4x Heart of Fire, 4x Breath of Wind, 4x Core of Earth, 4x Globe of Water.
These items drop from 46+ elementals of the appropriate type.
You will not get these items back.
4.9 What does the Tribal quest require?
You must have finished the Wild Leather recipe quest line. The NPC will not give you the quest if you have not finished the all 7 of the Wild Leather quests.
Bring your trainer 1x Wild Leather Helmet, 1x Wild Leather Vest. You don’t have to make these items yourself, but you still have to have done the Wild Leather quests.
Be aware, if you are also wearing one of these items, the trainer may take the one you are wearing. This has been brought to the attention of the devs as a bug.
You will not get these items back.
4.9b I can’t get the Tribal quest! What’s wrong?
First, make sure that you meet the requirements of specialization: level 40, skill 225, and Artisan Leatherworking.
Make sure you have completed all 7 of the Wild Leather quests below.
4.10 What is the Wild Leather recipe quest line?
It is a set of quests that yields recipes for Wild Leather armor.
You must complete all 7 quests to be able to receive the Tribal Leatherworking quest.
Alliance Quest: Pratt McGrubben, in Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas
Horde Quest: Jangdor Swiftstrider, in Camp Mojache, Feralas
Quest Tiers:
Wild Leather Armor (thick leather) ->
Shoulders (kits), Helmet (tunic, headband), Vest (gloves, breastplate) ->
Leggings (bracer, helm), Boots (boots, pants) ->
Cloak (deliver a letter)
Full quest requirements: 10x Thick Leather, 6x Thick Armor Kit, 2x Turtle Scale Gloves, 2x Turtle Scale Breastplate, 2x Nightscape Tunic, 2x Nightscape Headband, 2x Turtle Scale Bracers, 2x Turtle Scale Helm, 2x Nightscape Boots, 2x Nightscape Pants, 7x Wildvine.
You don’t have to make these items yourself.
Turtle Scale Gloves pattern is a dropped pattern.
Wildvine is a drop from trolls. Try Stranglethorn Vale or The Hinterlands.
Be aware, if you are also wearing one of these items, the trainer may take the one you are wearing. This has been brought to the attention of the devs as a bug.
You will not get these items back.
4.11 Is Wild Leather part of one of the specialized areas?
No. Wild Leather is a set of patterns that any leatherworker can learn.
It is required that you have completed the quests for Wild Leather to get the Tribal quest, but it is not part of Tribal Leatherworking.
You are not locked into Tribal if you complete this set of quests.
4.12 My specialized trainer only has two recipes! What’s up with that?
Each specialized trainer only has two recipes that they can teach you.
All other specialized recipes are found on vendors or are dropped. See Thottbot or the Professions Compendium for further details.
4.13 What can I make with Dragonscale Leatherworking?
All dragonscale items are Mail.
Materials required in addition to General Leatherworking: Worn Dragonscale, Green Dragonscale, Blue Dragonscale, Black Dragonscale, Red Dragonscale
